Nowadays, most appliance manufacturers are creating energy-efficient models for anything from refrigerators to A/C units to pool pumps. Here are the concepts and things to watch for:
ENERGY STAR is a joint program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy. It uses a rating system for how energy efficient an appliance is. Use this as a measure when purchasing your next appliance. Visit the Energy Star website for more.
Aside from the actual savings on your energy bill from using these appliances, your local power company may offer one-time rebates for purchasing energy-efficient appliances. In San Diego, SDG&E offers rebates on specific appliances and home improvements. Visit their website for more on rebates.
other than purchasing new appliances, you can also choose to use them more efficiently. First, run them during non-peak hours - after 7pm. Get the full benefit out of each usage - i.e. make sure your dishwasher is full before running it.
